Homespun Disposition

My ipod shuffle dug deep tonight and busted a Widespread Panic number right after ‘Love of My Life’ by Blues Traveler.  Talk about time travel.  I was right back in my old Toyota minivan driving around Fairfield, CT.  I’ve heard that smell is the strongest instinct that triggers memories but, man, tonight it was music.  I could almost taste the ’sweet cream’ ice cream that was always my favorite at Timothy’s.  I wonder if that place is still there and I doubly wonder if they still make that ice cream.  Driving around town, first to Penfield Beach then by the High School then up the Hill…not having anywhere to go but not having any desire not to go.  Did that make sense?  It did as I was thinking it but my fingers were a little delayed and, at this point in the sentence, Im pretty sure it didnt.  Oh well.  Its too late to go back now.

That driving around that I was doing in Fairfield was a continuance of the driving that I started in Kansas at the ripe old age of 15.  Cars were freedom in my young mind and even with nowhere to go, it was empowering to turn on the stereo and ride.  I was driving around Innsbruck the other night looking for a club called the Bierstindl and, having not found it on the first 3 tries, I just relaxed and enjoyed the ride.  With 17 years under my belt of aimless driving, it came naturally.  Benzine is now prohibitively expensive and the freedom I was yearning for as a kid I have found as an adult so there’s less need to escape into my car…Funny that an old song would make me think of all that…

It’s only slightly ironic that my Father would send me this link the morning after I ask you where Gumbo takes you.  Here we go again….
